Preparation for ESOPHAGOGASTRODUODENOSCOPY (EGDS).

  • The investigation is carried out strictly in the fasted state! From 10 to 12 hours break between the last meal and EGDS is required.
  • In the morning, it is also not recommended to smoke and take medicines in the form of tablets or capsules.
  • Before endoscopy it is allowed to: brush teeth; perform other investigations (for example, ultrasound); make injections in the morning, if necessary; take medications that can be dissolved in the mouth; 2-4 hours before the procedure, it is allowed to drink water without gas.
  • If the patient is taking drugs that affect blood clotting ability (anticoagulants: heparin, sodium hydrocitrate, neodicumarin, syncumar; antiplatelet agents: acetylsalicylic acid, dipyridamole, pentoxifylline, ticlopidine), it is necessary to consult with the doctor who prescribed these drugs the day before the upcoming investigation with a possible biopsy.
  • 5 days before the procedure, the patient has to avoid taking iron-containing drugs, activated carbon, bismuth-containing drugs.
  • The patient must have tests for hepatitis B, C; test for HIV infection (not older than 3 months); medicines that can be taken immediately after the procedure. It is also necessary to take data of previous investigations, if available. If the patient has an allergy, he must inform the doctor about it.
  • Important: for patients with epilepsy the EGDS is indicated only under intravenous sedation! Patients with arrhythmia, previous myocardial infarction and stroke should consult with a cardiologist and neurologist the day before investigation. Patients with diabetes need to make an appointment for an EGDS in the morning and take their medications with them (tablets, insulin). It is required to check the glucose level before the investigation. It is necessary to check blood glucose level in the morning before the investigation. Patients with bronchial asthma should take an inhaler with them.
